Ivan McWilliamsI grew up in both Adelaide and a country town in S.A and at the age of 16 left school with no real direction in life. I gained employment working for the PMG, which later became Telecom Australia. At 19 years of age I began learning an Indonesian martial art called Kemka Shaolin Kempo Sokajindo, a mixture of arts mainly those of the Pentjak Silat styles. Two years later the founder of this school Harry van Milt, retired at which point I took over teaching the students. I stayed with Telecom for 18 years even though I never really felt this was what he wanted in life. For the next 4 years after Harry left I kept teaching what Silat I knew and understood until meeting with Trevor Jarrad (one of Harrys' original and best students). Together over the next 6 years, we transformed the school and renamed it Kemka Silat. During this time I entered tournament fighting and eventually won the A.M.A.A. open free sparing over 5 years division. Later that year Trevor awarded me with the title of Pandekar (spiritualist and master-teacher). Sadly Trevor died 4 years later, leaving the school in my hands. At the age of 28 I became ill and over the next couple of years changed on all levels going into a dark space in my life. Finding that Western medicine had limited answers for this problem, I became motivated to search elsewhere for answers and found the help in Traditional Medicines, firstly help coming from an Ayurvedic doctor and then from a doctor in Traditional Chinese Medicine and this kindled my desire to learn more about them. In 1991 I began my studies in traditional therapies, receiving Diplomas in Sports and Professional Massage from the South Australian Health and Education Centre (SAHEC). I went on to earn a Diploma in Traditional Chinese Medicinal Theory and Jin Shin Do acupressure from the Academy of Oriental Therapies in Adelaide in 1993, this stirred my passion to learn more about this ancient medicine and so travelled to China and studied Tuina Anmo at the Guang An Men Hospital in Beijing. Three years later I received a Diploma of Acupuncture from the International College of Acupuncture in Colombo, Sri Lanka. In 1995 I began teaching Tuina and in 2003 wrote and started teaching the Diploma of Anmo Tuina. Since 1991 I have had a successful practice at the Eastern Remedial Therapy Centre in Norwood, Adelaide. In late 2003, I moved to and live on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland where I continue to teach and practice these techniques. I return to Adelaide regularly to teach at ATCCM and see patients. |
